Once again I am working with Jason.
This drill is very similar to yesterdays.
The main difference is the use a Back Hammerfist to counter attack with.
Again the attacker leads with an overhand punch to the forehead.
The defender defends with a ‘Rising Block’.
This time the defender also counter attacks with a ‘Back Hammerfist’ with his other hand as he blocks.
It works best against a strong single punch (as opposed to a flurry of them).

Simultaneous Rising Block with Counterpunch
Once again I am working with Jason.
Again the attacker leads with an overhand punch to the forehead.
The defender defends with a ‘Rising Block’.
This time the defender also counterpunches with his other hand as he blocks.
This is not always possible and must be set up in advance.

Rising Block / Check / Counterpunch
Today I am executing two man techniques with Jason.
The defender's lead arm blocks a heavy punch to the face from the attacker.
This has the effect of leaving the punching arm extended for just a second.
The defender then uses his rear arm to 'check' the blocked arm.
This has the effect of holding the extended arm in place for just a second.
Then the defender is free to use his lead fist to counterthrust.

Rising Block Counterpunch
This time around I use the same arm to block counterpunch.
I block with a Rising Block.
If the attacker pulls his arm back, I ride the attacking arm back in as counterpunch.
There is no time to pause and no need (it would be counterproductive in this instance).

Rising Block and Counterpunch
I start by facing my attacker while standing in a Left Forward Bow Stance.
I hold my lead arm low and my rear arm high.
I do this to entice him (or her) to punch to my face.
When he does, I execute a Rising Block with my lead arm.
There is a slight pause in case I need to block or move.
Then I punch with my rear arm.

Alternate Arm Drill with The Thrust Punch
The emphasis today is on the alternating arms.
This pull back of the returning arm adds power to any other punch.
(Even the ‘Flowing Punch’ I demonstrate while seeming to move away as I punch).

Alternate Arm Blocking Drills for the Torso
The three blocks I use to guard my upper torso can be done as alternate arm drills.
However, they are essentially single arms blocks.
They can be done from either the ‘High Guard’ or the ‘Low Guard’ with equal ease.

Alternate Arm Block with The Outside Block
Today I am concentrating primarily on the Outside Forearm Block
This is just a two step movement.
But whether I am using the palm or the forearm, getting the other arm out of the way is vital.
In this case, I merely drop my arm down to the hip.

Alternate Arm Drill with Inside Hooking Block
Today I use the ‘Inside Hooking Block’ with each arm (in turn).
The idea is that I start at my hip.
I wind up with my blocking arm.
In this case I reach over to my opposite hip.
I pull my other arm out of the way(as shown).
I drive out the block until it clears my body.
I make it a point to push my blocking arm out to the side as I snap my wrist around.

Alternate Arm Rising Block Drill
The first way I learned to practice one of the first blocks I ever learned.
The second motion of raising the arm from the hip sets up the blocking arm.
From there all I have to do to defend myself from a punch to the face is snap my arm up.
But there are many things that can go wrong so this block must be practiced, a lot.
That means in solo drills, with friendly partners and then with not so friendly partners.
And once it is down so that it can be used…It must be maintained…

One Minute Drill with High, Low, Center Punch Combinations
All I am doing is punching high twice.
Then I punch low twice.
Then I punch center twice.
Done once this is easy…
Done repeatedly for one minute is a bit more challenging.

One Minute Drill with the Offset Kick
Just like I have been doing all week.
I slide in with an Offset Kick on both sides…
Then I do the same with the Shift Forward version of this kick.
The doing is the important thing here.
Theory is great but only if it is put into practice.

One Minute Drill with High, Low, Center punches and then a Backfist
Today’s drill is different from the one I did a couple of days ago.
Today I punch from the hip.
I also add a Backfist at the end of each three punch drill.
Punching from the hip actually takes longer than punching from the ‘High Guard’ (shoulder height).
My punches travel at the same speed from either ‘Point of Origin’.
However, the punches done from the hip take longer to reach the target.
Both have their purpose and both should be done with equal vigor.

One Minute Drill of Slide in Front Snap Kick
The idea is to make the last kick as good as the first kick (as well as everyone in between).
As you can see, I execute the kick to the side of the bag once (to show control).
These are powerful effective kicks and should be do this way every time.

One Minute Drill of High, Low Center Punches to Heavy Bag
Just like it sounds…
A One Minute Drill of High, Low Center Punches to Heavy Bag.
Each punch must be powerful in its own right
Still, this punch be part of a three punch sequence.
And this sequence must be part of the entire drill.

Lunging Thrust with the Cane in the 5th Grip
I am standing in a Side Leading Neutral holding the cane in the 5th grip.
I step into a horse as I extend the cane in a thrusting fashion.
The move is shown in the video.
I am at kicking distance when I lunge.
This is a simple move.
I does not look like much but when I use it on the heavy bag; its power is apparent.
Distance and timing are important (but so is a firm grip on this short staff).

Review of Blocking and Striking Combinations
Just a quick review today.
First I block with my lead arm then I counter with my rear arm.
Three blocks for my head and three more for my torso.
Then I ‘double up’ on the jab.
These three combinations are followed by three more lead then rear fist punching combinations.

Slide in Front or Offset Kicks
Another thirty second drill.
I start and finish in a Forward Bow Stance.
I slide in and execute a kick.
Then I recover.
I spend fifteen seconds kicking from the left side.
Then I spend fifteen seconds kicking from the right.
It is not so much about speed as it is another form of practice.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!

I simply apply pressure to the elbow of the attacking arm.
Then I follow up.
