Slide in Front Snap Kick to Groin

Notice the last three kicks (done facing the camera).

The first is done slowly and as a demonstration.

The second one smacks of effort. It is easy to read from the expression on my face to the wind up poise of my body before I ‘unleash-the-beast’.

The last kick looks like nothing at all. Compare it to the kick I perform on the bag and they look ‘like-nothing-worth-worrying-about’.

I don’t want my attacker to worry about my kick (until it lands).

Shuffle in Horizontal Forehand Knifehand

Left to left and big rear hand to head…Similar to others this week…

This is what is different in today’s DRILL; I block then I follow the block with two punches to the body, then and only then, do I shuffle forward to land the big right hand.

If the block is not successful, the rest won’t work.

If the attacker is using a flurry of punches, a single block will not work alone.

If the counter punches to the body are not successful in damaging the attacker and forcing him to back away, it is unlikely I’ll be able to land the shuffle in knifehand.

But as a drill, this is a quick, easy and effective way to practice theses moves ending in a Shuffle in Horizontal Forehand Knifehand (followed by a straight withdrawal).

Shuffle in Lead Backfist from Horse

This is done ‘Classic’ style from the Leading Horse with a Horizontal Backfist. It doesn’t look like much and that is the point. It is both powerful and hard to read. Knock down power and/or a set up for something else.

Shuffle in Looping Punch

This is also known as a ‘Shovel Hook’. It is a looping right forefist thrust that should be following something light and quick. In this case, I’m using a lead jab to mask the movement.

Shuffle in Ridgehand Swing

This is a powerful forehand swing with the rear hand. In times past, it was done at an overhand angle and followed an arm clearing backhand swing. This is a bone jarring maneuver that makes up in power what it lacks in speed.

However…

It must be timed and placed with precision because it is easily defended against and countered.

Shuffle Lead Backhand Knifehand Thrust

This is almost the same as yesterday’s technique. I use the same quick shuffle in from Kicking distance and the same lead hand in a quick darting strike.

The main difference is that I use the edge of my knifehand to inflict damage.

Shuffle in Lead Jab

I shuffle forward from Left Forward Bow through neutral to another Left Forward Bow. As I make my final step, I punch with my left forefist.

While I call this step a ‘shuffle’, I am moving quickly and easily. The point of the step is to cover a lot of distance fast.

The basic rule is that if I am close enough to shuffle in a punch, I am close enough to be hit. Loitering close to an opponent is a good way to get hurt. I do my business when justified and I get out!

Lunging Horizontal Forehand Knifehand

Like the Ridgehand I showed a couple of days ago, this knifehand is a powerful fight finisher.

But it is slow and easy to see coming.

I make sure I preface it with a quick move first or risk having it successfully defended against.

Lunging Backhand

This is similar to the lunging backhand knifehand thrust.

I advance from a Right Side Cat Stance to a Right Leading Horse while executing a Backhand with my Right hand.

It is similar to a jab; this one comes from a side leading stance instead of a forward facing stance.

Lunging Shovel Hook with Forefist

Essentially, this is very similar to Monday’s technique. The punch is just more looping. It makes it easy to go around a guard (in certain instances).

I advance from a Left Cat Stance to a Left Forward Bow while punching with my Right Forefist.

It covers a short distance quickly and packs a wallop when it lands.

Easy to see coming and as I demonstrate, could be a good follow-up to a withdrawing attacker.

Lunging Ridgehand Swing

I advance from a Left Cat Stance to a Left Forward Bow while performing a horizontal Ridgehand Swing with my Right Forefist.

This is a very powerful blow but it is slow and easy to see coming. Timing its execution is critical to landing it.

Lunging Backhand Knifehand Thrust

This is similar to yesterday’s move.

I advance from a Right Cat Stance to a Right Forward Bow while executing a Backhand Knifehand Thrust with my Right hand.

It too, covers a short distance quickly and packs a wallop when it lands. When I hit the heavy bag, it shows just how much power it packs.

Lunging Forefist Thrust

I advance from a Left Cat Stance to a Left Forward Bow while punching with my Right Forefist.

Inverted Lunging Forehand Knifehand Strike

It comes from a Forward Bow advancing to Neutral while swinging the knifehand in a short forward swing.

This is a slow move that is easy to see coming so it should be masked with a block or jab first.

Inverted Lunging Backfist from Leading Horse to Heavy Bag

My heavy bag is braced from behind to stop it from swinging into the wall. Even so, my backfist makes quite an impact.

Inverted Lunging Shovel Hooking Forefist Thrust

This is really, just a looping punch. It can be done to the head or to the body. It should be prefaced with a quick strike of block because it is easy to sea coming.

However, it is a powerful strike capable of ending an encounter should it land correctly.

Notice how I demonstrate the withdrawal if I am using this strike as the last move on a ‘still-standing’ opponent.

Inverted Lunge Forehand Ridgehand Swing

This swing takes a long time to get to its target so it must be time d correctly and/or prefaced with a light quick jab, or smothering type move before it is utilized. Otherwise, the attacker will see this coming and avoid it or block.

Inverted Lunge Backhand Knifehand Thrust

This strike seems like a nothing maneuver but it reaches further than a stationary strike and it hits hard. Once again, note the last strike to see how I withdraw after I am done.

Inverted Lunge Punch against Heavy Bag

This punch employs a quick short half step designed to get just a few inches closer. The forward move also has the advantage of adding power to the strike. Note the last strike to see how I withdraw after I am done.

Angled Block with Advancing Counters

This video is the same as the previous ones shown during the rest of the week. The main differences are the block and the last withdrawal.

The block used is an angled block to cover the opposite side of the torso from a looping punch.

The actual withdrawal is rarely used. The attacker is usually down. Moving away at an angle is an intelligent thing to do as it is hard to follow.

Crossdownward Palm Block with Advancing Counters

The Crossdownward Palm Block is used to guard the solar plexus against a straight punch.

The counters are different on either side. On the one side, I am still as I punch before advancing with the Backhand Knifehand Thrust. On the other side, I am advancing as I punch so my knifehand is now done with the opposite arm (from the first side).

Mantis Block with Advancing Counters

Today I defend against a punch to the ribs with a mantis block. As my attacker withdraws in preparation for another run, I follow up with counterattacks. In this case I use a backhand knifehand thrust to the neck and a forefist punch to the torso.

Outside Palm Block with Advancing Counters

Fundamentally the same as yesterday.

The only differences are minor. The block is an outside palm (instead of an Inside Hook) and the advancing counters are done in a high, low, centre format.

Inside Hooking Block with Advancing Follow-up Counters

Similar to yesterday’s drill, I show this one from the side. I have also replaced the kick with a couple of half step punches.

It looks deceptively easy…

Rising Block with Advancing Follow-up Counters

Today I execute a Rising Block. I follow this up with a counter punch. Then I perform a short step with another punch and follow this up with a front kick.

The point is to combine stepping and striking in a smooth controlled and powerful fashion.

Lead Arm Angled Block followed by Rear Arm Counter Punch

The Angled block is almost the same as the Crossdownward arm block. It is just ‘angled’ over a bit to the far side. It is also only used against a looping body punch.
