Another Drill using Combination Punches off the Jab

This is a three strike drill.

I punch to the face, then to the body with the other arm and then to the face again with my first arm.

The Jab works like a block in that it fast .

The main difference is that a Jab goes to the face or body while a block goes against a limb.

Combination Punches off the Jab

There are basically two different types of two punch combinations I can use.

Either I punch with the same hand twice or with the lead then the rear.

I make my punches go to three different heights (face, upper torso and/or stomach).

The speed and power of a ‘Jab’ makes it an excellent opening strike during a sparring match.

A Fifth Horizontal Strikes with the Cane in the 5th Grip

A compilation of the last two days drills.

This drill defends my face and body from someone at punching distance.

I block either high or low but I defend on both sides before I swing the cane end.

I use the middle of the cane to block as shown.

Then I rechamber before swinging the end of the cane out.

When I block, I keep one hand still.

I make sure I go all the way through with my block.

Then I rechamber the cane for a counter strike.

It does not matter which end I use to strike with as long as I strike with the wood of the cane shaft.

(To reiterate: I do drive through with the cane shaft. I do not use the hook or the rubber tip.)

A Fourth Horizontal Strikes with the Cane in the 5th Grip

Similar to yesterday’s drill, except…

This drill is done against a slow but powerful punch to the body from someone at punching distance.

This time I block down instead of up before I swing the cane end along a horizontal plane.

This means I start with the cane at shoulder height.

I use the middle of the cane to block as shown.

Then I rechamber before swinging the end of the cane out.

When I block, I keep one hand still.

I make sure I go all the way through with my block so that I can see under my arm.

Then I rechamber with both hands up.

Only at this point to I keep one hand still as I drive the other end out into my attacker.

It does not matter which end I use to strike with as long as I strike with the wood of the cane shaft.

(To reiterate: I do drive through with the cane shaft. I do not use the hook or the rubber tip.)

A Second Horizontal Strikes with the Cane in the 5th Grip

This time I simply swing the cane tip along a horizontal plane on one side only.

The close hand remains still and I can use this strike with or sithout hip torque.

Again I am at punching distance.

When I strike without hip torque, the strike is quick and deceptively powerful.

When I strike with hip torque, the strike is a bit slower but much more powerful.

Horizontal Strikes with the Cane in the 5th Grip

A simple enough drill today.

These make good follow-up strikes.

I simple swing the cane end as shown in the video along a horizontal plane.

They are both powerful but slow so they have to be set up or they will be countered…

Another Drill with Block and Counter from the 5th Grip

I defend against a punch to the body this time.

I start facing sparring partner at punching distance with the cane across my body in the 5th Grip.

Swinging the tip across my stomach, I deflect the punch to the side.

I rechamber and crosscheck to the chest (this stopping any forward momentum).

Again, this is followed by a swing with the point to the side of the head.

As I have stated before:

The real danger in applying this drill in freesparring is twofold.

I am close enough for my sparring partner to smother my cane with his free hand.

I am so close that I am vulnerable right from the start.

Horizontal Strike with the Hook-End of the Cane

Please notice I said the’ HOOK-END’ of the cane.

I am using a simple horizontal strike (just like one of the four from yesterday).

The main difference today is that I am using the ‘Hook-End’ …

I make it a point to use the stick itself and not the handle.

The handle plays no part in this strike.

Using the stick only allows me to keep my wrist straight (as though performing a punch).

There is far less likelihood in hurting myself when working against a heavy bag.

Again, let me emphasis, this is a tool of training...

The cane is not a 'weapon of self defense' in Kisae Kempo!

Forehand Strikes with the Cane in the 5th Grip

Done just as I show…I keep my rear hand still and drive my lead hand (and the point of the cane) into my opponent.

I generally practice this at punching distance.

In many ways, it is similar to a lead hand forehand Knifehand swing.

Two Thrusts with the Cane

I work with the Cane because I use a cane in my non martial arts life. It makes sense to be able to use one in practice. It is not a weapon of self defense but rather a tool or ‘Training Aid’.

I use it to assist my balance when I am practicing my kicks. Between kicks (and before and after them) I have three choices: I can put it down, I can use it as an extension of my arms or I can let it get in the way.

By alternating putting it down with letting it become an extension of my arms; I am far less likely to let it get in the way.

I have also found that there is also this to consider; the average cane is light, flexible and durable with care and proper use. Slamming it into things is a sure fire way to break it…

So my training with the cane must be done with care and attention to form (and to the limits of the tool).

All that being said; I tend to use the cane as I would a short (three foot) staff.

Today I am practicing in the fifth grip (about a third and a third and a third).

I demonstrate two basic thrusts (the cross check with the middle of the cane and the point thrust).

There are others but these two also have the benefit of having the same distance as punching or kicking.

Crossdownward Palm Block and Counter with Half Steps

Once again today I am using ‘half steps’.

To or from neutral is one half of a shuffle (hence a ‘half step’).

I block with one hand, pause and counter with the other.

I go both forward and backward.

As I show, as long as my foot hits the ground before fist hits the target and my momentum is of a forward or stationary nature, it should not matter whether I am going forward or backward when I strike.

Mantis Block and Counter with Half Steps

Once again today I am using ‘half steps’.

To or from neutral is one half of a shuffle (hence a ‘half step’).

I block with one hand, pause and counter with the other.

I go both forward and backward.

While speed is absolutely necessary; it should be the result of practice (not the point of it).

The point is to be able to use this against a hostile aggressive attacker without thinking about it.

Outside Block and Counter with Half Steps

To or from neutral is one half of a shuffle (hence a ‘half step’).

I block with one hand, pause and counter with the other.

I go both forward and backward.

Note that I am still when executing my blocks…

Inside Block and Counter with Steps Drill

Similar to yesterday’s drill.

Today I execute a half step then block and then counter.

Also today I am only going forward.

It is the doing that counts.

Rising Block and Counter with Steps Drill

Basic Rising Block, slight pause and counter while stepping.

This looks simple and done solo, it is.

A Fifth Multiple Block then Multiple Counter Drill

Today I defend against two jabs to the face.

As I guard against the jab, I lower my rear hand out of the way.

While this does free up my rear hand to block or counter; it also leaves that side of my head exposed.

Returning to the ‘Guard’ (both hand up) after the drill is an important must.

A Fourth Multiple Block then Combination Counter Drill

Again today the attacker starts with a jab to the body and finishes with his rear fist to the face.

I use my lead arm to slap the jab down with a Crossdownward Palm Block.

But this time I follow up with an Inside Block and then the  same arm counter punch to his face.

I follow up with three more punches.

Another Multiple Block Multiple Counter Drill

This drill is used against a jab to the face and a cross to the body.

It is very similar to what I did yesterday.

I use my lead arm to block twice and counter once.

Again I add three more counters on top of that.

As I said yesterday: this drill is not ‘set in stone’.

Therefore, I today my second block to low.

Also, I vary the targets when I execute my follow up counters (at speed).

Again, it is the timing and placement that I concentrate on when working the drill solo.

One Multiple Block Multiple Counter Drill

This drill is used against a jab cross combination to the face.

I use my lead arm to block twice and follow up counter.

Then I add three more counters on top of that.

It is just a drill; it is not ‘set in stone’.

Therefore I am free to change pieces of it as the situation requires.

I concentrate on timing and placement when working the drill solo.
