Slide in Front Thrust Kick

The video show it better than I can explain.

A Few Key Points:

I keep my back straight, my core firm and my support knee bent.

I turn my support foot about 45 degrees away from the kick.

I extend the kicking foot out as I make contact with the ball of the foot.

Done in the air, this kick looks light and easy.

Done against a 120 pound heavy bag; the power becomes obvious.

Crossdownward Arm Block

A fourth basic Block review.

This is an alternate arm blocking drill using the ‘Crossdownward Arm Block’.

Light easy wind-up followed by a sharp twisting driving strike to my attackers arm.

Outside Forearm Block

A third basic Block review.

This is an alternate arm blocking drill using the ‘Outside Forearm Block’.

Notice that I slow down this block and actually do fewer in the thirst seconds than yesterday.

Inside Hooking Block

This is another basic Block review.

This is an alternate arm blocking drill using the ‘Inside Hooking Block’.

The wind up is relaxed while the actual block is snapped and hard.

Notice the twist of the wrist as I finish the block.

The Cane in Mid Grip: Crossdownward Block with Counter Punch, Then Thrust with Mid Cane

Very similar to yesterday’s drill..

I hold my hands high.

I execute a Crossdownward Block with the Mid part of the Cane.

As I block, I counterthrust with my other hand to the head.

Then I follow this up by thrusting with the mid part of the cane to my opponent’s torso.

The Cane Mid Grip: Rising Block then a Thrusting Counter

Again, this is very similar to yesterday’s drill.

I hold the cane in one hand in the middle.

I block a punch to the face with Rising Block.

I ride the block into a thrusting Counter to the attacker’s face (as shown).

Again, this is a light, quick move that feels like nothing at all.

Only when contact is made is the power of this move shown.

The Cane in the 5th Grip: Horizontal Swing from the Open Side and all Six Basic Strikes

While my Cane travels in an arc, my arm executes a Forefist thrust.

Only the wrist bends so that I make contact with the Cane End..

I start in a Forward Bow with the Cane in the 5th grip.

It is held parallel to the ground.

Then I drive it forward from the ‘open side’.

I recover to my original position and repeat.

I also demonstrate the pattern of all six basic strikes with the cane in the 5th grip.

There are many more ways to strike with the cane…

This pattern demonstrates only the six that I have shown this week.

The Twelve Grips on the Cane

I am practicing this pattern of changing the grip on the cane.

I familiarize myself with how to move it around in preparation to block, strike etc.

This is an important part of training and should not be neglected.

It builds confidence in moving the cane (short staff) into a position it can be used best.

The Cane in the 5th Grip: Underhand Swing from the Closed Side

Almost the same as yesterday except I am striking from the Closed side.

I start in a Forward Bow with the Cane in the 5th grip.

It is held parallel to the ground.

I lower my cane to the ‘closed’ side up until it is at an angle.

Then I drive it upward.

I recover to my original position and repeat.

The Cane in the 5th Grip: Overhand Swing from the Closed Side

Almost the same as yesterday’s drill (but on the closed side of the stance)..

I start in a Forward Bow with the Cane in the 5th grip.

It is held parallel to the ground.

I raise the cane up on the ‘closed’ side up until it is at an angle.

Then I drive it down.

I recover to my original position and repeat.

If I wish to use this it should be prefaced with a quick jab-like movement first.

A Review of Cane Retention Drills

I step forward to a Bow as I row the Cane Forward or Backward (as shown).

This is a review of the things I was doing a couple of days ago.

The point of this drill is to perform these actions effortlessly and repeatedly.

A Fourth Basic Cane Retention Drill

(WARNING: These drills are very challenging and should only be learned from a qualified expert.)

What I am showing is for demonstration only.

It is with some trepidation that I show these drills at all.

Because on the face of it; they look simple and straight forward.

But Make No Mistake: cane retention can be a messy, violent business…

Again, this is NOT the entire way to retain my short staff.

It is part of a much larger series of movements and strategies.

These are designed to keep me in safe and in possession of my cane.

This exercise is design against someone who has grasped the center of my Cane.

This is for the end of the cane being grabbed by the opposite side hand..

I am standing in Neutral with the cane end extended in front of me (where my attacker grabs it).

I step forward and the cane as shown in the 12th grip (which is really a version of the 5th grip).

Then I step back as I draw the cane close to my side.

I circle to the inside and down (as shown).

This actually reads as quite complicated but it is not…

Everything associated with these drills happens very close up (closer than punching distance).
