Reverse Image Side Kick Defense 3rd Variation

http://youtu.be/Fe4a8WoKKqE

Defender and Attacker face each other at kicking range. Both lead with their left legs.

The Attacker slides in and shoots his left leg as a Side Kick into the Defender’s Lower Torso and follows with a strong Lead Backfist to the head.

The Defender steps back (his rear leg first) slightly. As he withdraws, he blocks down and back with his Lead Arm in a parrying motion that redirects the kick to the side. He follows this up with a rear arm Outside Palm Block against the backfist.

Unlike yesterday, the Defender does not shuffle forward. He is close enough to use is lead arm to punches low then high while covering /guarding with his rear hand.

At this point he withdraws.

In the last three defenses, it is the distance of the counterattack takes changes. It is the same defense and even the same counter. However, the full step, short step or no step that changes in order to maintain the optimum distance for the defender.

Reverse Image Side Kick Defense 2nd Variation

http://youtu.be/o1qKntX6LZM

Defender and Attacker face each other at kicking range. Both lead with their left legs.

The Attacker slides in and shoots his left leg as a Side Kick into the Defender’s Lower Torso.

The Defender steps back (his rear leg first) slightly. As he withdraws, he blocks down and back with his Lead Arm in a parrying motion that redirects the kick to the side.

The Attacker drops his kicking leg but fails to withdraw. For a second he is a stationary target.

Like yesterday, the Defender shuffles forward but today he only does a short shuffle in order to attain punching range. Once close enough, he punches low then high with his lead Forefist while guarding with his rear hand.

At this point he withdraws.

Mirror Image Side Kick Defense 3rd Variation

http://youtu.be/vhcqzWLVPqw

Attacker and Defender face each other in mirror stances (right leading stance against left leading).

The kicker slides in, his lead leg Side Kicks to the groin and then he drops forward as he launches a Lead Arm Backfist to the head.

Like yesterday; the defender withdraws back to a Left Leading Cat stance and using his right arm Blocks the back of the kicking leg with a downward Parry. This parry blocks back along the kicking leg and guides it slightly off course beside the target.

This is immediately followed by a Lead Arm Outside Palm Block against the Backfist to his head.

Only at this time does the defender step forward with his lead leg and punch to the body with his rear arm. Using his lead arm, he pulls the attacker’s lead arm down and punches the attacker again, this time in the head before withdrawing.

Mirror Image Side Kick Defense 2nd Variation

http://youtu.be/JTZcXLtxx64

Attacker and Defender face each other in mirror stances (right leading stance against left leading).

The kicker slides in, his lead leg Side Kicks to the groin and then he drops his leg to the ground. This time he stays, perhaps to kick again.

Like yesterday; the defender withdraws back to a Left Leading Cat stance and using his right arm Blocks the back of the kicking leg with a downward Parry. This parry blocks back along the kicking leg and guides it slightly off course beside the target.

Before the kicker withdraws or kicks again (as he lowers his kicking leg), the defender follows with a shifting forward offset kick to the kickers own groin. The defender takes care to keep a good distance from the attacker when countering.

The main difference between yesterday and today; the kicker moved back just out of range yesterday. Today, he stays at kicking range. In both scenarios, it is apparent that the kicker is dangerous throughout the drill.

Floating Block with Spin kick Counter 3rd Variation

http://youtu.be/Q6GB-pbnnCk

As before, the attacker comes in with a powerful roundhouse kick to the front of the defender. This is followed up by a lead jab to the head and rear thrust punch to the body.

The defender performs a floating block against the kick. He turns this into an inside block against the jab which is followed by a mantis block against the punch to the body.

At this point the defender turns toward the attacker and punches twice before withdrawing far enough to spin and drive his back kick into the attacker.

Defensive Drill against Roundhouse kick with Follow-ups

http://youtu.be/g-E89COdD8M

In this case, the attacker kicks a roundhouse kick to the midsection. Immediately, it is followed up with a backfist to the head and a punch to the body.

The defender blocks the kick, the backfist and the punch with light quick yet powerful blocks. The counter attacks are two punches followed by a kick before withdrawing.

This drill is a light quick exchange and should be open to change depending on circumstances.

Defense against Multiple Roundhouse Kicks

http://youtu.be/y9gAQEdiVVI

This is a drill that comes in two parts; attacker and defender. The drill teaches many things and I practice it regularly.

The idea is that the attacker initiates several roundhouse kicks from neutral to the defender.

The defender,  as soon as the initial roundhouse kick is launched, slams is floating block into the attacker’s shin, The defender draws is rear leg forward and strikes the attacker with a lead arm Backfist. The defender steps back slightly and follows up with a roundhouse kick of his own to the groin.

It is at this point that the defender disengages and withdraws with his guard up

Groin Defense against a Hard Driving Front Kick with Full Advance and Jab Follow-up

http://youtu.be/lWbD1xLJD2I

The attacker kicks and then falls forward to follow the kick with a same side punch.

The defender kneels as he drives his palm heel into the attacker’s leg where the ankle meets it. The defender holds his other hand high as a precaution against the jab. He steps back and kicks.

Groin Defense against a Hard Driving Front Kick with Full Withdrawal

http://youtu.be/Tc8WmFFI1cg

This is pretty much the same defense I showed a couple of days ago. The main differences are the attacking kick is hard and heavy and done with the rear leg. The counter is also done with my rear leg.

A Simple Stationary Groin Defense against a Slide in Front Kick to the Groin

http://youtu.be/5cDL1kItzUU

So far this week I dealt with groin kicks that finished the kicker at kicking distance (or further). Today, as the kicker finishes the kick to the groin, he falls into his same side punch to the face.

As the defender, I kneel and palm heel block the kick. As I rise up, I use my other hand to brush the punch out of the way before counter punching. I follow-up this counter with a shift away front kick before withdrawing.

Intermediate Defense against a Front Kick to the Groin

http://youtu.be/E4HOr6Qob7A

Similar to yesterday’s defense except that the kicker stays put so my counter must adapt for that.

As I kneel, I drop my palm heel into the top of his incoming foot.  I straighten up. At this point, as my attacker remains stationary but drops his kicking foot to the ground, I advance with a half step and counter with my own front kick. Then I withdraw with my guard up.

Block, Simultaneous Block with Forehand Knifehand

http://youtu.be/xaJdoiR-fbc

The Forehand Knifehand is a big heavy blow that can finish a fight if it lands. The slight quick block that deflects an attacker’s incoming punch is an excellent initial move to ‘pave the way’ for the Forehand Knifehand.

While I wouldn’t strike from the ear with it, I would have y hands up and as I swung the Forehand Knifehand, it would pass through the ‘ready position’ of the hand by the ear.

Block, Simultaneous Block with Hammerfist

http://youtu.be/NP9u2CRXsQA

Today’s drill is all about using this arm position. One arm is held up and the other is at mid height and across the body.

Alternating between blocks alone and blocks done with simultaneous Hammerfists (or Backfists) is more difficult that it looks and care should be taken that it be executed correctly even if at first, it has to be done slow.

Block, Block with Counter

http://youtu.be/5cdXFGpEXQ4

The whole idea of this drill is make both the block by itself and the simultaneous block with counter interchangeable if the situation presents itself. Sometimes only a block works best and sometimes it is better to block with a counter. Knowing which is best is important but only if I can actually apply the correct one instinctively.

Block, Block/Check, Counter

http://youtu.be/nuTOpro_2cY

The timing for this drill is a little different than yesterdays. I block with my lead arm (a full beat) and then I use the same arm again (another full beat) to perform a second block. At this point, I use my rear arm to check (a half beat). Only now do I execute a counter attack (another full beat).

The result is a different rhythm: 1, 1, ½ , 1. I only check those strikes which are heavy, ponderous and relatively slow.

Same Limb Block Then Counter with Insert

http://youtu.be/KhbteOOaTVE

The rhythm of, ‘one, two, three’, is what I am after. I am keeping the same basic rhythm over and over. It can be done quickly or slowly but it is still the same rhythm.

Once it has been achieved, changes can be made…

Block then Punch Drill with Insert

http://youtu.be/4tlCwY9S498

This is a basic lead arm block, slight pause then rear arm counter punches. The only difference is that in this drill, instead of pausing, I use my lead arm to block again. The rhythm remains the same; one, two three.
