Rising Block and Multiple Counter Attacks

http://youtu.be/yhdrRRrG5Ns

My lead arm performs a Rising Block. There is no pause between my block and same limb counter.  Then I perform two counter punches. I finish with a rear leg shift away lead switch Front Snap Kick to the groin before withdrawing.

This is a continuous stream of movements until the kick. It is a blitz defense.

Angled Downward Block and then Multiple Counter Attacks

http://youtu.be/vMrk1yIfvqQ

My lead arm performs an Angled Downward Block to guard my ribs from a punch to the body. Then I pause (or block again with the same arm). Only then do I perform three counter punches (at different heights). I finish with a Front Snap Kick at the groin height before resetting in the Bow.

The pause between the initial block and the initial counter attack is deliberate. There are other tactics that can be used on this attack but that is for another time. One of the reasons I pause in this drill is so that I can block again if necessary.

Repetition is the key to making sure this strike is strong and focused.

Crossdownward Block and then Multiple Counter Attacks

http://youtu.be/NqJ1NWQfCpY

My lead arm performs a Crossdownward Block to guard my solar plexus from a punch to the body. Then I pause (or block again with the same arm). Only then do I perform three counter punches (at different heights). I finish with a Front Snap Kick at the groin height before resetting in the Bow.

It is very important to drill this rhythm to the point that I can perform it without thinking and yet every strike is strong and focused.

Learning to throw multiple counter attacks is simply one skill that this drill enforces. Learning to work the four different rhythms is another (the first block and pause and one rhythm, the three counters is a second rhythm, the shift away front kick is the third rhythm and the step down and back if the fourth rhythm).

Outside Palm Block and then Multiple Counter Attacks

http://youtu.be/rmWQivk4xTk

My lead arm performs an Outside Palm Block. Then I pause (or block again with the same arm). Only then do I perform three counter punches (at different heights). I finish with an Offset Snap Kick at the groin height before resetting in the Bow.

As I did yesterday (and the day before), I make the pause between the initial block and the counter attack deliberate. There are other tactics when I perform the counter much quicker (or even simultaneously with the block). The pause in this drill is so that I can block again if necessary.

Fourth Grip on the Cane and the Second Combination Swing

http://youtu.be/qIWxpbAeBmY

This combination is a Light Horizontal Backhand Swing followed by an Hard Overhand Forehand Swing. The first is done light while the second is done hard.

Again, the cane in the fourth grip utilizes training at kicking distance. The broad swings of the cane (even lightly) are very similar to the same sort of timing one would use in kicking.

The first swing is like a quick snap kick while the second is a power movement.

It is important to be aware and train with the likelihood that the distance between adversaries can change in an instant. It would be unwise to be caught by surprise.

Fourth Grip on the Cane and the First Combination Swing

http://youtu.be/0LLk8whURgM

This combination is a Horizontal Forehand Swing followed by an Underhand Backhand Swing. Both can be done light or hard.

This is a drill that emphasizes training at kicking distance. The broad swing of the cane (even lightly) are very similar to the same sort of timing one would use in kicking, as well.

It is important to be aware and train with the likelihood that the distance between adversaries can change in an instant. It would be unwise to be caught by surprise.

Fourth Grip on the Cane and the Underhand Backhand Swing

http://youtu.be/JnaiNI69Ts0

Again, this is a version of the same swing I did a couple of days ago but this one is harder to control. A mistake here can result in the cane impacting on the striker.

As I demonstrate, this is all about control of the Cane yet it is also about power generation, balance, distance and timing. This is also done lower than yesterday’s overhand swing.

An Underhand Backhand Swing can strike forward into a target at shin height or it can strike upward into the groin.

It too, can be done as a light quick movement or as a power strike with hip torque.

Fourth Grip on the Cane and the Backhand Swing

http://youtu.be/hFI99wRN3fY

Like yesterday’s technique, there are basically two ways I practice this Backhand Swing. Either it is quick in and out or I wind right up and put my hips into the swing.

Both are practiced at Kicking Range. In the minimal swing, the wrist does move a bit but the hips are still. In the big swing I wind up with my arm and torque my hips as I swing.

I simply allow the bag to get in the way of my swing.

Fourth Grip on the Cane and the Forehand Swing

http://youtu.be/M1qy87AsRco

There are basically two ways I practice this forehand swing. Either it is quick in and out or I wind right up and put my hips into the swing.

As I demonstrate, it is like a Forefist thrust, either I jab or I drive thru with a hip torque puinch off the rear hand.

Both have their uses.

Two: High, Low, Center Forefist Thrusts (from the low guard)

The main difference between today’s drill and the one I demonstrated a couple of days ago is that I am thrusting with one hand then the other from the hip in today’s drill. That is two punches high, two punches low and two punches center.

Even though this is a drill, each punch should be struck through the bag (not just too it).

High, Low, Center Blocking Drill: Inside Hooking Blocks

http://youtu.be/Dk5UHW3KKHU

This is basic drill uses only the Inside Hooking blocks and guard from my head to my chest. The arms start and finish at the same time. There is no head or torso movement. My core is engaged and my knees are bent.

This drill is not about speed or power. It does build  coordination, focus, reflex and overall awareness.

http://youtu.be/uQAVLm2ub0M

The main difference between today’s drill and the one I demonstrated a couple of days ago is that I am thrusting from the hip in today’s drill.

With one fist extended and the other in the low guard position (at the hip), I thrust high, low and center. I do this with hip torque over and over.

As I demonstrate, each punch should be struck through the bag (not just too it)

High, Low, Center Blocking Drill: Outside Palm Heel Blocks

http://youtu.be/_A1Ek31YHHE

Another basic drill that requires I move my arms around my stationary body. The arms start and finish at the same time. There is no head or torso movement. My core is engaged and my knees are bent. In this case, my palm heel travels entirely across my body.

This drill is not about speed or power. It does build coordination, focus, reflex and overall awareness. It is very unlikely I would be able to use this in a serious conflict.

This is another of the several variations of this drill. Today I am using a High Outside Palm Heel Block, a Low Outside Palm Heel Block and a Mi Outside Palm Heel Block.

The Cane and the Lead Leg Kick

http://youtu.be/knb4cfz-eEw

Using the Cane in the fifth grip, I advance from a Left Stance(Bow or Horse) to a Neutral Stance. I jab or strike with the end of the cane into the bag in a high-low-center pattern. I follow-up with a left lead leg kick and withdraw back to the original left stance.

I switch stances to a Right Stance and repeat on that side.

Because this is a review of the last four days, I did them in order.

Nothing fancy, just basic techniques at fingertip distance.

The Cane and The Side Kick

http://youtu.be/Q-fcdPpD_Uw

Similar to what I did yesterday and the day before but this time I’m starting in a horse.

Using the Cane in the fifth grip, I advance from a Left Leading Horse Stance to a Left Leading Informal Attention Stance. I hook the end of the cane into the side of the bag in a high-low-center pattern. I follow-up with a left Side Kick and withdraw back to the Left Leading Horse stance.

I switch stances to a Right Leading Horse and repeat on that side.

This is somewhat more difficult than yesterday’s drill because the distance varies slightly between the cane strike and the kick. This distance must be accounted for or the kick will be jammed up and less effective.

Starting slowly, I concentrate on the correct distance and position. Then I build up my speed and power as the drill progresses.

The Cane Tip and The Offset Kick

http://youtu.be/dD291jjRuDg

This is very similar to yesterday’s drill.

Using the Cane in the fifth grip, I advance from a Left Forward Bow Stance to a Neutral Stance. I strike with the end of the cane into the bag in a high-low-center pattern. I follow-up with a left offset kick and withdraw back to the left bow.

I switch stances to a Right Forward Bow and repeat on that side.

Again, I start slowly; I concentrate on the correct distance and position. Then I build up my speed and power as the drill progresses.

The main difference in this drill is that I can torque into the strike with the cane tip (or not) depending upon what targets are open and how hard I what to strike.

Cross Checking Drill with The Cane

http://youtu.be/Pg0VC3ZHs0M

A simple enough drill.

While holding the cane in the fifth grip, I step forward from Neutral into a Left Forward Bow Stance. Then I cross check high, low and center. The n I step back to neutral.

Now I perform this drill on the right side.

Alternating sides, I increase speed while maintaining good form and proper distance.
