Simultaneous Mid Blocks with Counterpunch and Stance Switch: A Timed Drill

This time I go through the three basic mid (or upper torso) blocks against a punch.

A Mantis Block, a Crossdownward Palm Block and an Angled Palm Block.

I execute an Overhand counterpunch with the opposite arm as I block.

I add a stance switch with every three blocks.

Today I am a bit slower than yesterday.

Simultaneous High Blocks with Counterpunch and Stance Switch: A Timed Drill

This time I go through the three basic high blocks against a punch to the head.

A Rising block, an Inside Block and an Outside Palm Block.

I execute a counterpunch with the opposite arm as I block.

Add to this a stance switch with every three blocks and I have an interesting drill.

Today I did it for about twenty seven seconds (by the timer on my camera).

Outside Palm Block Alternating with Hip Torque Trust Punch: Another Timed Drill

Again, I simply block with one arm and punch with the opposite arm.

I continue this for thirty seconds.

Every punch I drive out with hip torque.

And again, I managed to perform eighty arm maneuvers in thirty seconds.

Please note this is drill is used to promote easy of movement under pressure,  it is not an application.

It is not an application.

Vertical Blocks then Follow-up Counterpunches

Similar to what I was doing yesterday except these blocks strike from side to side.

Make no mistake; these blocks are strikes to my opponent’s arms.

Multiple Horizontal Blocks then Counterpunch

Just a quick review today of the same arm executing a Rising block, followed by a Crossdownward Block.

I can even do it in reverse.

Then I either counter with the same arm.

Or…

I pause slightly before countering with the rear arm.

Crossdownward Palm Block, Follow-up Block, Counterpunch

Today I start by defending my stomach from a punch.

I use a Crossdownward Palm block.

I then follow this up by guarding my face against a punch with a Rising Block.

At this point I use the same arm to ride in with my counterpunch.

Outside Block, Follow-up Block, Counterpunch

Almost the same as yesterday’s drill.

I simply go in the other direction.

These blocks are not pawing or pushing moves.

These blocks are precise and powerful strikes to my opponent’s arms.

Inside Block Follow-up Block then Counterpunch

Similar to yesterday’s drill.

I execute an Inside Block.

I immediately reverse the motion and perform an Outside Palm Block with the same arm.

It is at this point that I have a choice.

I can use my same arm again and drive directly into a counterpunch.

Or…

I can pause before countering with the opposite hand.

Rising Block Follow-up Block Counterpunch

Just like it sounds.

I execute a Rising Block.

Then I use the same hand again to block with.

Only then do I counter.

In this drill I can counter with either arm.

High, Low and Centre Striking Drill with the Cane in 5th Grip

I hold the cane in the 5th grip and punching range.

This drill is very similar to the punching drill I did yesterday.

I strike high, low and centre with the ends of the cane.

Again, like my punches from yesterday, I go for thirty seconds.

Proper technique must be maintained during this exercise.

High, Low and Centre Punching Drill

When I am punching the heavy bag these days I make it a point to wear gloves.

This drill is a simple enough one: I punch high, low and centre.

I punch from the high guard position and I go for thirty seconds.

Proper technique must be maintained during this exercise.

High, Low, Centre Blocking Drill

I execute high, low and centre using the Inside Hooking Block.

I immediately continue with high, low and centre using the Outside Forearm Block.

Again, this is not done too fast or too hard but rather it is done smoothly and with focus on each block.

Step by step…

Block and Counterpunch Drill

Basic block with the left hand then counterpunch with the right.

Then I block with the right and counterpunch with the left.

I repeat with all six basic blocks.

It is a simple enough drill.

The point is to do it over and over until I can do it without thinking.

Slide in Kicks

Just the Basic Slide in Kicks

Today I use the cane to assist my balance when I kick.

I am using the opposite hand to hold the cane.

For example, if I use my left leg to kick I use my right hand to hold the cane.

Coordinating the use of the short staff in training requires constant practice.

Or it will fade with time…

High, Low, Centre Punches to the Heavy Bag

This drill I do only once in a while and only when I am warmed up.

I put the emphasis on each punch being powerful and effective.

How many I did is not as important as the fact that each one was done well.

Block and Counter Using the Cane

*Warning*
This is a deceptively easy looking drill.
Striking with the cane hook is very difficult and it requires excellent form as well as a strong grip.
Done incorrectly, a cane thrust as shown can result in a damaged wrist.

My lead arm blocks.

I pause.

I counter with the hook (as shown).

I follow up with more counter thrusts using both the cane and my bare fist.

Simultaneous Block with Counterpunch

This drill is done against a heavy bag.

I start slow and gradually increase both speed and power while maintaining proper form.

The emphasis must be on proper form at the correct distance using the right rhythm.

Slide in Kicks from a Leading Horse

Today I am executing a slide in Roundhouse kick then a slide in Side Thrust Kick.

Basic moves but they must be done until they are reflex and practiced constantly.

Block then Counterpunch

Same basic idea as I have shown in the past.

There is a pause between the block and the counter.

There is more than one tactic that can be used here.

However, this one is the most basic and it is a three count technique.
