5th Grip Cane Block and Counter Drill

This is a Basic Block and Counter drill.

As shown I can cover my head and torso at punching range from a straight in Forefist attack with these.

Block and Counterpunch

Same drill I did a couple of days ago except that I am now doing a more standard format.

I use a Forward Bow and a Basic Defensive Fighting Position.

I also use a basic thrust instead of the ‘Butterfly Punch”.

The timing and distance are the same though…

Lead Backhand Then Butterfly Punch Follow-up

Similar to yesterday’s drill.

Only I lead with a short snapping Backfist before I drive thru with my power punch.

The idea is a short move followed by a long one is more likely to go in and not be defended against.

Note that my stance is like my arms; both are wide and open for this drill.

That is because this is a drill form the old school...

Block and Counterpunch with So-called Long Arms

Same thing I was doing before…

Except that today I start in a Forward Facing Side Bow.

I snap out a quick block with my lead arm.

I bend both arms and torque though with mt feet, my hips and my entire body as I counter.

The counter today is what is known as a ‘Butterfly Punch’.

This is a long move and must be prefaced with a short one or it will be seen and easily defended against.

Block then Two Counter Punches

A slight variation on theme today.

I block with one hand.

I pause.

I throw two counterpunches.

I perform the six basic blocks to protect against punches to the head and upper torso.

A Speed Punching Drill

This is not a typical speed drill.

I do not care how many I throw.

I throw them for thirty seconds.

I make them the best punches to the bag that I can.

I also make it a point to wear gloves when I do this.

High, Low, Center, Inside Blocking then Check Drill

Again, this is the same basic idea as two days ago…

Today I add a check with the other hand after I have done the Inside Hooking Block.

This defensive strike is done against a powerful and heavy shove, grab or lumbering punch.

High, Low, Center, Outside Palm Blocking Drill

Again, this is the same basic idea as two days ago but today I use only the Outside Palm Block.

Basically my arms travel in the opposite direction they did during yesterday’s drill.

High, Low, Center, Inside Blocking Drill

Same basic idea as two days ago but today I use only the Inside Hooking Block.

During this drill I make it a point to keep my torso firm and still.

By doing this I am actually able to make a powerful block.

(If I was slack and off balance, my block would not be as powerful.)

A Second High, Low, Centre Blocking Drill

This also covers the entire head and torso.

The difference is that this drill uses only Forehand Palm Heel Blocks.

All three are down High, Low and Center.

All three go completely across the body.

In all three my torso is completely still.

High, Low, Centre Drill

Basic Rising Block, Downward Foot Block and Inside Block.

The timing and rhythm of this backhand blocking combination should be effortless .

At the same time, each block should be powerful and focused.

These are all strikes…

Slide in Roundhouse Kick then Follow-up Front Kick

In order for this combination to work, my roundhouse kick must land hard.

In this way this drill is much like some of the other drills I have done this week.

After I land the Roundhouse kick, I turn toward my attacker as I set my leg down.

I use my other leg to land a Front kick.

Only then do I withdraw back out.

Slide in Roundhouse Kick then Crossover Spinning Backfist Follow-up

In many ways this drill is similar to yesterday’s drill.

The timing and the distance are the same.

So is the danger of exposing ones back to an opponent (no matter how brief that time may be).

I land the roundhouse hard enough to make my opponent pause.

This gives me the time I need to cross over (as shown) and spin my backfist.

Slide in Roundhouse Kick then Spin Thrust Kick follow-up

Step in and shoot out a Roundhouse Kick.

This kick must land hard and the attacker must react to it for this combination to work.

I drop my kicking leg and turn my back to my opponent before driving out my other heel.

It is only because I landed the roundhouse kick hard that I have the luxury of turning my back at all.

This turn is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted unless the opponent is momentarily incapacitated by the roundhouse kick.

Slide in Roundhouse Kick then Follow-up Same Leg Roundhouse Kick

Similar to yesterday’s drill.

I slide in to Neutral from a Leading Horse Stance.

I whip out a roundhouse kick with my lead leg.

I follow the kick with another same side Roundhouse Kick.

Slide in Roundhouse Kick then Follow-up Lead Backfist

Just like it sounds.

I slide in to Neutral from a Laeding Horse Stance.

I whip out a roundhouse kick with my lead leg.

As I set the leg down, I follow the kick with a same side Backfist.

Blocking with the Cane in the 7th Grip and then Counterpunching with the Bare Fist

I stand at punching distance from the heavy bag today.

I use the middle of the cane to block as though it were an extention of my arm.

I pause slightly.

I counterpunch with my other arm.

Basic Block then Counter…

Simultaneous Bare Arm Block With Cane Counter Thrust from 5th Grip

Similar to yesterday’s drill.

The main difference is that I counter as I am blocking.

This drill requires a lot of practice to get down and a lot more practice to keep it useable.

Bare Arm Block Then Cane Counter Thrust in 5th Grip

My lead arm blocks, I pause slightly then I thrust with the cane held in the 5th grip.

When I counter, I do not turn for more distance.

It is true that I put my hips slightly into the strike but the emphasis is on ‘slightly’.

When I am countering high, I lift the striking arm before I counter.

This is one of those drills that require a LOT of practice.

So many things can go wrong that this drill must be done slowly and carefully.

And that is even before bag work is included.

Work on the bag should start slowly and gently and gradually increase.

Even done fast and hard it should feel easy and effortless.

Simultaneous Bare Arm Block with Cane End Counterthrust

Only four of these today.

I block while counter thrusting with the cane.

Rising, Inside, Outside and Mantis.

The last two risk getting the cane tangles up.

Basic Arm Block then Cane Thrust Counter

I use my lead arm to execute a basic block covering my head or upper torso.

I pause slightly.

Holding this short staff in the 10th grip; I counter thrust to my opponent’s body.
